SOUTH BEND, Ind. — In a game that delivered on rivalry intensity and postseason implications, Notre Dame powered past USC 34–24 Saturday night, led by a breakout performance from sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love, who racked up a career-high 228 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Irish found themselves in an early battle as USC’s offense, behind quarterback Malachi Maiava, struck quickly through the air. But after a back-and-forth first half, Notre Dame’s defense tightened, and their ground game began to dominate.A turning point came midway through the third quarter when Jadarian Price electrified the home crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown, giving Notre Dame a lead they would not surrender. That momentum swing fueled the Irish on both sides of the ball — the defense forced critical stops and an interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Quarterback C.J. Carr managed the game efficiently, completing 16 of 26 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a short rushing score. Though Notre Dame’s passing attack never broke open — their longest completion of the night was only 15 yards — the combination of a relentless run game and disciplined defense was more than enough.Defensively, the Irish held USC to just 68 rushing yards and shut them out in the fourth quarter. The unit made two pivotal plays down the stretch: a fourth-down stop with just over six minutes left and a game-clinching interception with a minute remaining.
Despite some flaws — nine penalties for 96 yards and struggles on third down (4-of-13) — Notre Dame’s resilience shone through. Every time USC appeared poised to rally, the Irish responded with poise and physicality.Maiava finished with 328 passing yards and two touchdowns, but USC’s offense faltered when it mattered most. Their inability to sustain drives late cost them the game, turning a close contest into a comfortable Irish victory.
The win keeps Notre Dame in the national spotlight as they continue their push for a playoff berth. For USC, the loss highlights ongoing issues with consistency and execution, especially against top-tier opponents. As the crowd in South Bend roared at the final whistle, it was clear that this wasn’t just another chapter in the storied Notre Dame–USC rivalry — it was a statement game. Behind Love’s historic performance, Price’s special teams spark, and a determined defensive stand, the Irish showed they’re capable of winning tough, physical football when it matters most.
